Coral is known as ‘the garden of the sea’ as it was once believed to be a plant, although we now know that it is formed from the accumulated skeletal masses of living creatures called polyps. The hard exterior of coral is naturally matte, but polished to a glass-like shine, the beautiful pinks, reds, oranges and yellows of the naturally occurring coral have an intensity that is unrivalled.
Coral has long been associated with natural healing and protection as the dark red colour is believed to be synonymous with blood and life force. Dreams featuring coral are thought to foretell recovery from a long illness. Pink shades are used more for mental healing such as for depression and to promote healing of the heart and the emotions.
Often created in beads of varying shapes and sizes, coral has traditionally been worn around the neck to offer protection from the elements and in particular to avoid skin disease.
