Cornelian, or Sard as it is also known, is a reddish brown mineral form of chalcedony, which is primarily found in India and South America. The colour can vary greatly, ranging from pale orange to an almost black shade.
Cornelian was once considered to be exclusively the preserve of the rich upper classes, with high profile families being buried with it to signify their status. Considered to be an energy booster, healers often recommend that introverts carry this gem to help to bring out their character and help them find the strength within to prosper. It is also considered to help stoke the appetite and protect against poverty.
Commonly used from the age of the Roman Empire for signet or seal rings, this hard, semi-precious gem can be engraved with great complexity.
