Black onyx is the most famous variety but it is not as common as its red or orange counterparts. A banded chalcedony, Onyx has been used since antiquity for hard stone carving and jewellery making due to its intense colour and high shine when polished. Its bands are parallel to each other, as opposed to the more random occurrence that is found in agates.
Black onyx is said to repel the negativity of others and help to promote determination and perseverance. A great defender, it deflects negative emotions, allowing for te good to be worked through. This is an excellent stone to be used at time of great sorrow or grief to help protect against the negative energies of others and allow healing of the self to be unobstructed. In healing it is often recommended for kidney stones to help the expulsion of the pain from within.
Onyx is often used to create large slices and home decorations, even implements such as mortar and pestles, yet its high shine finish lends itself well to jewellery and the banded nature makes for dramatic effects when carved. It creates striking cameos.
