Rubies are pink to blood red coloured gemstones, closely related to sapphires. There is no true demarcation between Ruby and Sapphire but today the name Ruby is given to only the darker red Sapphires. Extremely tough, only moissanite and diamonds are harder, with Ruby rating at a 9 on Moh scale of mineral hardness.
Considered extremely lucky in Eastern cultures, Rubies have long been held in high regard, included on everything from armour to encourage good fortune in battle to house foundations for an auspicious family life. The traditional birthstone for July, Ruby is filled with love and passion and is often used in healing for blood and circulatory problems as well as for intensifying passion in a relationship. Catherine has designed a number of pendants using large Sapphires or Rubies and has she also created several exquisite suites; necklace, earrings and ring that have included large numbers of smaller sized stones. Widely acknowledged as the most powerful gem, to own a Ruby is said to invite contentment and peace.
