Topaz is one of the hardest natural gemstones. Usually highly transparent, it is most famous for its blue variety, but is also found in a range of other sparkling colours from deep wine to milk white. Naturally occurring blue topaz is quite rare, it is more often the case that the topaz is treated to help encourage the desirable blue hue.
Topaz is one of the twelve breastplate stones of the High Priest referred to in the Book of Exodus. The breastplate stones are considered sacred to twelve mighty angels who guard the gates to Paradise. Topaz is thought to have a calming effect on the emotions, improving mental clarity and focus. It is used in healing to stimulate the appetite and energy, making it particularly useful for those suffering from exhaustion and feeling drained of energy. Topaz is the traditional birthstone for November.
